In October 2020, I acquired a 2-inch forehead laceration that resulted in an atrophic (indented) scar that runs down the middle of my forehead from my hairline to my eyebrows. I wrote about my wound and scar care in January 2021 here.

When I learned that microdermabrasion may help reduce the appearance of scars and that suction was beneficial for atrophic scars, I immediately purchased the Yofuly Diamond Microdermabrasion Machine from Amazon. The reviews were good and I took a chance. At this time the Yofuly machine is listed as “currently unavailable” on Amazon.

My experience with microdermabrasion treatments is sparse. I had one med spa treatment and enjoyed it but did not consider scheduling regular treatments. In addition, I never considered purchasing a microdermabrasion machine for home use, until I acquired an atrophic scar on my forehead.

I am not affiliated with the company that manufactures the Yofuly Diamond Microdermabrasion Professional Dermabrasion Machine or it’s distributers. After using the machine on my scar, face and neck, I am pleased enough with the results that I decided to write this review.

The Diamond Microdermabrasion Machine uses a stainless-steel wand fitted with diamond encrusted heads to gently abrade and exfoliate the skin. Maximum suction is reported to be 65-68 Centimeters of Mercury (cmHg). The wand is connected to a suction tube that removes exfoliated skin cells and collects them on a disposable cotton filter. The machine is easy to use and effective. It has operated well and was a good purchase at $129.

I began using the microdermabrasion machine about two weeks after my forehead laceration healed. Some references suggest using microdermabrasion as soon as a scar heals, others recommend waiting. I used a diamond head recommended for scars, applied a gentle suction and gently abraded the scar while applying a low suction pressure. I proceeded to use the tool on my face and neck and made one pass in a vertical and one pass in a horizontal direction.

After completing my first DIY microdermabrasion treatment, I’ve continued to complete one treatment per week. I plan on continuing this regimen indefinitely due to the multiple skin care benefits that it provides.

A professional microdermabrasion session may cost $150 to $200. Microdermabrasion results are subtle and include: smoother skin, brighter complexion, reduced dark spots and fine lines and cleansed pores. When skin cells are exfoliated, the skin is more receptive to active ingredients in serums and creams and to other facial treatments. The side effects of microdermabrasion are typically minor and include short-term skin redness. Folks with cold sores, sensitive skin and those who scar easily should take precautions when considering microdermabrasion. This reference recommends not using retinoids or facial acids two weeks before and after microdermabrasion.

I give myself DIY microdermabrasion treatments 48 hours following Retin-A/retinoid or facial acid application and have not had an issue. If my skin were red or tender, I would postpone a treatment until the skin is healthy.

The first time that I used the Yofuly Diamond Microdermabrasion machine, I exfoliated a large amount of dead skin cells and changed the filter half way through. During subsequent treatments I have only used one filter per treatment. The DIY microdermabrasion treatment felt terrific and my skin felt smooth, my skin was temporarily red. I exfoliated my lips and loved the effect. Exfoliated skin allows for increased penetration of skin care ingredients and I applied a DIY Niacinimide/Glucosamine serum followed by a DIY vitamin C serum immediately after my treatment. After every DIY microdermabrasion treatment, I use one or several DIY facial tools including (I am not affiliated with any device) the NuFace, the TriPolar Stop, the DermaWand or Near-Infrared Light and Red-Light Emitting Diodes (LED) before applying active serums and creams. I have not noticed dramatic changes in facial fine lines or hyperpigmentation but love the feel of my smooth exfoliated skin so much that I will continue to use DIY microdermabrasion to deep clean my skin, remove dead skin cells and enhance penetration of DIY facial tools and skin care products. I have not taken selfies, but my impression is that my skin looks super healthy a couple of days following a DIY microdermabrasion treatment.

I have used the Yofuly Diamond Microdermabrasion machine about 16 times. Based on my experience, the Yofuly machine is easy to use. The diamond heads remain effective, the suction is good and the cotton filters are easy to use. I would recommend purchasing this machine when and if it becomes available again.
